Lash lift or
extensions?

These two treatments get talked about as alternatives, but they do different jobs. One changes the lashes you have. The other adds lashes you do not. Picking well is mostly about being honest with yourself about upkeep.

The short answer

Get a lash lift if you already have decent natural lash length, you want to stop thinking about your lashes entirely, you swim or train most days, or the monthly cost of extensions does not appeal.

Get extensions if you want visible length or density your own lashes cannot provide, you are happy to come in every two to three weeks, and you like the look of a mapped, finished lash line.

If you have short or very fine natural lashes, a lift has less to work with and the result can underwhelm — that is the most common disappointment, and it is avoidable by asking first.

What a year actually looks like

Extensions: a full set, then a refill every two to three weeks, indefinitely. Around $1,500 to $1,800 a year and roughly 26 appointments. In exchange you never wear mascara and your lash line always looks done.

Lash lift: one appointment every six to eight weeks. Around $550 a year and about seven appointments. Your lashes look like your lashes, lifted and darkened — noticeably better, but not longer.

The honest framing is not which looks better. It is whether you want a standing fortnightly commitment. Plenty of people try extensions, love them, and move to lifts a year later purely because of the schedule.

Can you do both?

Not at the same time — a lift changes the curl of the natural lash, which makes a poor base for bonding extensions, and doing both stresses the lash unnecessarily.

You can absolutely alternate. A common pattern is extensions through summer and event season, then a lift through winter to give the natural lashes an easier few months. If you are moving from extensions to a lift, have the extensions professionally removed and wait about a week first.

Questions

Commonly asked

Is a lash lift better than extensions?

Neither is better - they solve different problems. A lift curls and darkens the lashes you already have, lasting six to eight weeks with no upkeep. Extensions add length and density your own lashes cannot, but need a refill every two to three weeks.

Which is cheaper, a lash lift or extensions?

A lash lift, considerably. About $550 a year against $1,500 or more for maintained extensions.

Will a lash lift work on short lashes?

It works, but the result is less dramatic - a lift changes the curl and direction of what you have, it does not add length. On very short or fine lashes, extensions give a more noticeable result.

Does either damage your natural lashes?

Neither does when done properly. Damage from extensions comes from poor isolation or too much weight; damage from a lift comes from leaving the solution on too long. Both are application faults rather than anything inherent to the treatment.

Can I have a lash lift and extensions at the same time?

No. A lift alters the curl of the natural lash, which makes a poor bonding surface for extensions, and combining them puts unnecessary stress on the lash. Alternate between them instead.
